Strobes & Flash Housing

An underwater housing usually allows the use of the camera's built in flash which is fine for subjects close to the lens but for better results and to help reduce backscatter an external flash or strobe is recommended. The can either fit using the housings external hot shoe or on a bracket and are fired either using a slave sensor on the flash or via a dedicated TTL cable.

Epoque Underwater Flash Epoque manufacture two underwater digital compatible slave flash units, both of which are depth rated to 45m. Power output is variable and they have a YS mount so are compatible with 10 Bar, Epoque and Sea & Sea lighting brackets.

Fuji Underwater Flash Fuji produce a compact slave flash unit which is compatible with most digital cameras. It comes in a kit complete with a YS fitting arm and bracket.

Ikelite Underwater Flash Ikelite produce a range of quality strobe flashes to compliment their underwater housing range. Their Autoflash AF35 is a slave strobe suitable for Ikelite compact camera housings. They also produce a DS range of strobes which offer TTL flash photography when used with a compatible housing. Ikelite strobes are used and recommended by divers the world over.

Olympus Underwater Flash Rather than producing slave units, Olympus manufacture underwater housings for their TTL hotshoe flashguns. The advantage of this is that once connected to the camera via the connection cable the flash will be fully synchronised. Also electronic triggering allows the cameras internal flash to be disabled which conserves power and eliminates possible light leakage.

Sealife Flash & Accs Sealife manufacture two external flash units. The SL960 is compatible with all Sealife digital and film cameras. The more recent SL960D is pre flash compatible so works with all digital cameras, has continuously adjustable light output and includes the flash link fibre optic cable.
