A great value general purpose lens. L series it aint, but image quality is great with only slight vignetting at very wide angles. Sharpness is good in the central part of the image and only slightly soft in the corners. It's not over heavy and sits nicely even on a lightweight body like a EOS350; it's really well balanced on a EOS40D. The lens is a bit slow for low light work, but the image stabilisation goes a long way to make up for the rather small maximum aperture. With a bit of practice it genuinely does give 3 stops latitude. It can be tough to get a nicely out of focus background though, so having a really fast cheap 35mm prime in the bag is not a bad idea.
