This is a great little lens. Don't be fooled that it's a 'kit' lens - the optical quality is superb. At the wide end, this lens suffers from much less chromatic aberration (colour fringing) than the three-times more expensive EF-S 17-85 IS USM - I have just 'upgraded' to this cheaper lens as the optics are so much better! Build quality is good for the price too.

This is a decent quality lens at a very good price. I bought it because of the image stabalisation. My test shots appear to confirm that it is effective allowing me to use shutter speeds about 3-4 stops slower. I compared test shots against my Tamron 18-250 zoom and there was not much difference except I felt the canon lens was lacking a little in contrast.
I also compared it to my 50mm f1.8 standard lens and the standard lens is much sharper has better contrast as you would expect. It is however I believe a very good value for an image stabalised lens and a much better than the previous kit lens I was offered and declined when I bought mt 400D.

Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS EF-S Lens Question Date Added: 2nd November 2008
Question: For a beginner to try some macro work would this 18-55mm lens work well with the 25mm extension ring you sell? or would it be better to save up for the proper macro lens?
Bristol Cameras Answer: Hi, this lens is compatible with the Canon EF 25 II Extention tube but only at the 55mm end of the lenses zoom range. Extension tubes are a good value way of getting into close up photography without the expense of a dedicated macro lens. The Kenko extension tubes are also worth a look as the set includes 3 different tubes for varying the magnification given. Hope this is of help to you. |

Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS EF-S Lens Question Date Added: 12th May 2008
Question: Is this lens fully compatible with the Canon EOS 5D?
Bristol Cameras Answer: Hi, this lens will not be suitable as it is an EF-S lens which are designed for smaller APS-C sizes sensors. As the Canon EOS 5D has a full frame sensor then you need to go for a lens which is suitable for 35mm or full frame slr cameras such as Canon EF (not EF-S) and Sigma DG (not DC) lenses. Hope this is of help to you. |
