I have recently switched fro using a Canon XHA1 to just using my iPhone 4 for small business production in an attempt to prove that small pocket devices are now at sufficient quality to use for professional production.
In my drive to create a kit bag of small devices I have a pro mic, monopod and an OWLE bubo iPhone housing. However, something was missing what I needed was either a lightweight shoulder brace or a steady-cam unit.
To my surprise when researching the products available I cam across this unusual hybrid unit from Manfrotto.
Knowing Manfrotto's reputation for high end tripod and grip accessories I was convinced that this would be a great product but expected it to have a fairly high price tag. The great news is is that it is a great product and has an amazing price tag.
The device not only works as a solid shoulder brace but also as a good steadycam for smaller devices and as an added bonus the handle splits into the to make a very useful and solid table top tripod.
Pros:
Solid construction, useful, lightweight, easy to use, low cost.
Cons:
Not suitable as a steadycam unit for larger cameras with heavy lenses. To qualify this my brother in Florida uses a Canon 5D he bought the unit for that and has told me that the shoulder brace configuration is excellent, the table top tripod works well but the counterbalance and setup for the steadycam is not suitable for larger DSLR cameras. That being said tho this device is not really aimed at that market so you can't really blame the device for that.
Conclusion:
This unit has now become a permanent piece of my mobile kit and performs very well for its intended use. If you use a pocket type devices like the iPhone(You will need a holder for the iPhone with a standard tripod thread in order to attach it to the unit www.iphone-tripodholder.com) or Flip this is ideal.
Would I recommend it yes most certainly and even better in my research Bristol Cameras were the best price int the UK.
