I wanted a three way head that would be sturdy enough for a field camera, but wouldn't be over kill for a medium format or d-Slr on it, when out shooting. I reckon this is the best all round option, if you need versatility. It is a bit heavier than I expected, and the angle marking could be a bit more precise, but I suppose thats what the three spirit levels are for!

I had long since decided to use RC4 plates as standard fittings on my Canon gear (2 cameras/long lenses/head attachments) and had used a Manfrotto 488RC4 ball head for everything. This gives me the option to dabble in medium format in the future without buying more. Very solid and stable and fine in the field, but a lack of single-plane control in the home studio had proved awkward. So given that geared heads are ?silly.99 I opted for the latest updated tilting offering from Manfrotto, the 808RC4 head. Now that takes up it's rightful place on my tripod at home, freeing up the ballhead to go permanently mobile on a monopod or whatever. 5***** as usual for Manfrotto!
