Metz 48 AF-1 flashgun - I purchased this to use with my Olympus E510 camera as an alternative to the Olympus FL36 and FL50 flashguns. It was an excellent choice, it has full TTL features and does everything the Olympus FL flashes can do. It is more powerful than the FL36 and costs about the same. I would strongly recommend this flashgun.

The Metz 48 flashgun is a good purchase in two main categories. The first is an alternative to the Olympus FL-36, which is the budget flash offering from Olympus. In this arena, the Metz compares favourably, offering an improved range as well as faster cycle times, since the Metz uses 4xAA batteries instead of the 2 that the Olympus uses.
The 48 doesn't come with secondary reflector, but supports TTL, TTL-HSS, Auto, Manual and RC flash modes.
The RC flash mode is where this unit represents great value. If you already have a main flash, and are looking for additional slave units to use with the E-3, E520, or E-420's remote flash system, this unit represents great value.

The Metz 48 AF-1 Flashgun has been purchased to be used with my Sony A700. Early days yet, but have briefly tested all the functionality to ensure compatibility and everything seems fine. Good value for money and much cheaper from Bristol Cameras than the usual sources.

The only criticism I have of my camera is of it's built-in flash which is feeble. This Metz 48 AF-1 makes all the difference! It is a well made gun that performs superbly and feels as if it will last for years.

The Metz 48 AF-1 digital is a powerful flashgun with a lot of settings. It produces well exposed shots. Wireless master slave functionality, second curtain synchronization, modeling light, flash bracketing, built-in diffuser and reflector card are all there. You get the whole package with this unit. Basically this flash looks good, feels good and performs good. So just watch out for the weak tilting lock, make sure you like the user interface and don't mind the -for Can- inscription.

Metz 48 AF-1 Flashgun Question Date Added: 22nd July 2008
Question: Apart from the obvious difference in power, what are the other main differences between the 48 and 58AF flashguns? I have a Sony A100.
Bristol Cameras Answer: Hi, comparing the 48 and the 58, the Metz 48 doesnt have these features: No A (Auto) mode, it has no built-in sensor, it relies on the camera metering. No secondary (infill) flash and obviously a lower power output (GN of 48 rather than 58). If you are just after a basic flash for point and shoot shots then the 48 does a very good job. If you do alot of photography and your budget allows go for the 58. |
