This is a quality lens. At 3.5-5.6 it's not very fast but the sharpness is amazing and the VR does help a lot. At this price it's a steal. Upgrade to this would be the constant f/2.8 17-55mm at around ?1k... So if you haven't got ?1k to spend on lens and you didn't get this lens with your kit it's really a simple choice: buy!

Excellent and well worth getting the VR model as compared to the normal one. But most new Nikons come with this anyway.
