The lens feels well-made and operates smoothly. With an equivalent focal length range of 27-112mm it is a really useful lens for general purpose photography with the bonus of close focus. Images are sharp, show no colour fringing and of good quality at all focal lengths and apertures with the expected exception of 17mm and full aperture (f2.8). Here there is a softer image (but still quite suitable for medium sized prints) and obvious barrel distortion and vignetting. These two latter defects are easily dealt with in software. No complaints from me!

I have already written a review on this lens but since then, have used it loads more so a "refresh" is in order. I have a Canon 20-35 lens which I bought some years ago and it is a great however, I rate this Sigma as better.
Like most I guess, if I had the money I would have "bought the brand" but consider the prices: 16-35 @ £989, 17-85 @ £329 or the 17-55 @ £649.
So as you do in life, you have to make a 'budget compromise' as I had to on buying this lens but, if you are faced with the same situation, have no hesitation, this is a cracking lens and a great buy. I have been 'pushing it' under various circumstances and am impressed, no compromises here !

I recently upgraded my Canon 350D to a 40D and having passed on the 350 with its 18-55 lens, I needed a short zoom replacement a bit better than the 18-55 but not too much more money. My most used lens is my Canon 28-200 but you do need a wider angle choice too so price and specification did swing it for me on the Sigma.
The lens itself is very well made, looks right a feels right. Comes complete with a lens hood and the pictures I have taken so far, seem excellent with no obvious lens generated faults on the results - the guy behind the camera is another matter ! Of course, I haven't had it long and the weather has been pretty poor of late but I am very happy with it.
