My wife bought this lens for me as xmas present.I have only tried it out recently and the results were good, the lens is sharp light easy to use build quality is ok. I used my Sigma 17-70 lens taking photos of motor cross last year found the lens zoom range, telephoto was not enough. As I am going to the TT races in June I think the Tamron will do the job. As I did not want to spend a fortune on a lens that I only may use once or twice a year this lens is ideal. At thev moment I would rate the lens 4.5 stars untill further evaluation.

A simple straightforward lens. Quite small and robust. AF adequate but distinctly 'old type' mechanics. Manual focus ring is narrow but quite usable. For the current price this is worth having as a spare, as a 'rain/beach' lens or as a bit of experimental kit for microscope or leaving outside for wildlife trip activated work. It's as sharp as my other lenses with no significant distortion in normal use. Rated with price in mind!

From my use of the kit lens supplied with my Sony Alpha 300 I knew that either the lens or the body had back focus issues. I bought this lens and a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and concluded the camera body was at fault. I fixed the focus issue myself and have since been delighted with this lens. It's sharper than the kit lens even at 200mm and wide open. Recently visited a Farm Park and was able to get some close up shots of the Peacocks and Goats. Very sharp. You can tell this is a cheap lens by the very lightweight, plastic build quality and the fact that the front element rotates when focusing but the most important thing is the quality of the images it delivers and here I have no complaints. I would recommend this lens even if it cost twice as much.

Bought as a cheap second lens for my Nikon D40, I knew that auto focus wouldn't work with my SLR but wasn't a concern. Build quality doesn't seem too solid but for the price I can't really complain. Decent focal length although close focus is impossible with this lens so not really too suitable for true macro shots as advertised on the box.

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars! [3 of 5 Stars!]

Well what can one say, for the special offer price of £30.00 my expectation was of no dramatic concern, after all it was only £30.00. The outcome was in a totally different league, the quality of the performance of the lens sends it into a £100.00 plus area and I am so delighted that it stays on my Nikon most of the time. The build quality is not up to the high price lenses, but that is only to be expected. I am so glad that I found Bristol Camera's.

Great lens with a sturdy build, despite the plastic body. Focus is crisp, if slightly slow. Would recommend to anyone who wants a decent zoom lens at a cheap price, but who doesn't mind a slower focus time.

Tamron 55-200mm f4.0-5.6 Di II LD Macro Lens Question

Date Added: 21st May 2008

Question: Is this lens compatible with the sensor in a Nikon D40 digital camera please?

Bristol Cameras Answer: Hi, its compatible with the sensor but as this lens doesnt have a built in AF motor then you will only have manual focus when this lens is used on a Nikon D40, D40x or D60. You need to look for a lens with a built in AF motor for full compatibility, so either a Sigma HSM or Nikon AF-S lens (the Nikon 55-200mm f4.5-5.6 G ED AF-S DX lens for example) or a Tamron lens which mentions having this built in motor.

Question: Is the Tamron 55-200mm f4.0-5.6 Di II LD Macro Lens compatible with the EOS 5 non - digital camera. If not have you got any lenses that are.

Bristol Cameras Answer: Hi, this lens is only suitable for digital slr cameras with an aps-c sized sensor so it would not be suitable for a non digital slr camera unfortunately. You would have to look at the Canon 55-200 f4.5-5.6 II USM EF lens which is suitable for both 35mm and digital slr cameras. This lens is available on our website.

Tamron 55-200mm f4.0-5.6 Di II LD Macro Lens Question

Date Added: 14th November 2007

Question: Is this lens fully compatible with the Nikon D40 D-SLR? If not could you please recommend a Tamron/Sigma lens for the same. I am looking at an economically priced 18-200mm or 55-200mm spec lens for my D40 Camera. Thanks a lot.

Bristol Cameras Answer: To ensure the lens is fully compatible and gives autofocus operation you need to go for either a Nikon AF-S lens or a Sigma HSM lens - both of these range of lenses have the AF motor in the lens so will give autofocus. A non AF-S or HSM lens will work but you will only have manual focus. Therefore you could look at the Nikon 18-200, Nikon 55-200 (normal or VR) and Sigma 18-200 OS.
