Slik Sprint Pro 2 GM Tripod by Daniel Dorosz      Date Added: Saturday 27 June, 2009

Slik Sprint Pro 2 GM TripodAmazingly lightweight for a full size tripod. Be aware that inevitably you compromise sturdiness for lightness. While perfectly adequate for my D60 with kit lens (indoors), it was unusable with the 70-300VR. I've ordered a sturdier ball-head for use with the heavy lens, hopefully that will do the trick.

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG / HSM Lens by John Haynes      Date Added: Tuesday 23 June, 2009

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG / HSM LensI have had this lens for about 18 months. The Bristol Cameras shop is a very small 'corner site' but with my "Christmas Money" in early January I turned up wanting to buy a 70-300 zoom for my Canon 350D. Amazingly they happened to have on the premises every Canon, Sigma and 'other' combination or equivalent lenses and having bought my camera with me, I was able to 'try' them all out including the far more expensive Canon IS equivalent. Truth to tell, I could have bought any of them but in the end bought this Sigma because on the same camera body with the same lighting conditions I decided that this was the best and today, I don't regret my choice, all that I can say.

Sealife SL9618 Flash Diffuser For SL961 Strobe by Jeff Cooke      Date Added: Saturday 20 June, 2009

Sealife SL9618 Flash Diffuser For SL961 StrobeAbout time Sealife produced this item. Well made and good fitting product. Disappointed that the surround is black unlike as in the advertised item photo. Hopefully this won't sharpen the flash cut-off when the diffuser section is folded out of the way - a white diffuser surround may have softened the edges? - although I have still to try the diffuser out underwater.

Seculine Twin-1 R4N Wireless Shutter Release by DAVID LONSDALE      Date Added: Sunday 14 June, 2009

Seculine Twin-1 R4N Wireless Shutter ReleaseThe Seculine Twin - 1 R4N Wirless Sutter Release is Absolutly marvelous! Why: - well it has no wires either to the transmitter or the receiver; though it is also suppled with cord with the ten pin connector (receiver)at one end & a plug at the other end to connect to the transmitter. I prefer going totally cordless! The transmitter and receiver are well built & compact in nature.Just be carefull when attatching the reciever to the ten pin socket, its fiddly; one could easily bend the recievers pins. The transmiter has settings - focus (half depressed), fully depressed to take the picture, push the mechanism away from your body, up, for continuious shooting. I bought a wirless shutter release elsware, the battery failed in the reciever, the battery cannot be replaced. I wasted my money! I won't with the Seculine! The Seculine mechanism works on my Nikon D300 & Fuji S5 Pro. This Seculine Wirless Release is the best I have seen, I have NO doubts in recomending it to all! I might even by another & keep the reciever attatched to the camera?

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S VR DX Lens by Stephen Ellis      Date Added: Saturday 06 June, 2009

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S VR DX LensAlthough this is a kit lens from a Nikon D90, it is a perfect partner to my Nikon D80. It is lighter and smaller than the 18-200mm and the 18-135mm nikkor lens plus it still has VR. Also as from what the previous reviewer has said I also will be using this lens as my main lens for 90% of shots.

Pentax 35mm f2.8 SMC DA Macro Limited Lens by Mark McKeever      Date Added: Thursday 04 June, 2009

Pentax 35mm f2.8 SMC DA Macro Limited LensThis is a great lens. It's small, light, sensationally well built and beautiful to handle. Its performance is first rate, the images it produces are sharp across the frame, even from wide apertures, and show great contrast, definition and very little in the way of chromatic abberation or lens flare - in fact I have been completely unable to induce any lens flare at all, even with the sun directly in the frame - impressive stuff. Macro performance is very good, although this is not the lens to use if you want to take close-ups of bugs and critters - the working distance is very short. But for floral or other still life work this is not a problem. Also a very nice general purpose "walk around" lens, with a field of view similar to the classic 50mm of the film era. I like this lens a lot and would highly recommend it.

Lensbaby Muse - Plastic Optics by Martin Byrne      Date Added: Saturday 30 May, 2009

Lensbaby Muse - Plastic OpticsBought the Muse plastic after looking at examples of results on Flickr (search 'lensbaby'). Id been wanting a certain feel to my images and was suffering from 'red spot' fever, in other words I was thinking of a Leica compact, with f2.8. I liked the style of the pictures, but 500 quid! Realised that I mostly wanted the shallow DOF and some distortion. Having been out for a day with the Muse and 2.8 on my Nikon D200 in A mode, it is without doubt FUN. Now I am wrestling with the fact that it could be regarded as a 'one trick pony'. I hope to find that it is a far more subtle tool when I try it with other apertures, and possibly some portraiture or still life. I wont regret buying it in any case, a snip at 65 quid, when compared to the Leica, and macro to boot.

Jobo Photo GPS Unit by Neil Dunlop      Date Added: Tuesday 26 May, 2009

Jobo Photo GPS UnitIt works well and is very very fast at picking up your location. It seems to do this even when you are in trees. OVERALL: I like it. Expensive but does the job effectively. The software does work 'straight out of the box' but needs improvement. Main, Pros are: 1) Fast location identification. 2) Light, small. 3) True position at which you took the photo. Main Cons: 1) Can only tag all photos imported. 2) Can't use the camera's built in flash.

I used my Sigma 17-70 lens taking photos of motor cross last year found the lens zoom range, telephoto was not enough. As I am going to the TT races in June I think the Tamron will do the job. As I did not want to spend a fortune on a lens that I only may use once or twice a year this lens is ideal. At thev moment I would rate the lens 4.5 stars untill further evaluation.

Cokin P Series ND Graduated Kit (H250A) by Mark Richards      Date Added: Saturday 16 May, 2009

Cokin P Series ND Graduated Kit (H250A)Cokin filters offer good value-for-money, and I'm using this kit to get a feel for using ND grads in landscape photography, as they cost roughly a third of the price of a LEE set they're ideal for dipping a toe in the water and deciding if its a style of photography that is of interest. The kit contains Cokin's standard P series holder, and a set of three soft graduated filters, corresponding to 1, 2 and 3 stops worth. All three come in their own plastic case to keep everything clean and safe. Optically they seem to be acceptable, no obvious colour casts or distortions. As the holder is Cokin's standard, it isn't suitable for use with my Sigma 10-20mm lens at its wider settings as the arms of the filter holder are visible in-shot, luckily I already have another that has been trimmed back to just the thin slot for circular filters and the first sprung type for the ND grads, only drawback is I won't have the option of fitting more than one resin filter with that lens. If I do decide to get serious, I'll need to upgrade to a larger format, such as Cokin's Pro X series or indeed the much-recommended LEE.

Crumpler Muffin Top 7500Just received my Crumpler Muffin Top 7500 and am seriously pleased with it. Upgraded from a Pretty Boy XL which was ideal for my D40 but not quite up to my D90. My Nikon D90 sits snug and firm in the middle with a snug fitting pocket for my 55-200mm, flash and comfortably has room for another lens, cloths, extra cards, a cleaning kit, spare battery, wireless remote and body cap, it even has a little space where you can tuck the strap away neatly too. Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM EF Lens by Mark Bradley      Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM EF LensIf you're considering going on a safari then I have to say that you would find it hard to find a better lens without the need of a BBC support crew. The compact size means that you don't find yourself hitting other people in confined safari vehicles and the image stabilisation, speed of auto-focus and the quality glass expected in an L series lens mean that you should get some great images even if the animals stay slightly further away than you would hope. If you want to extend the zoom to 800mm then you can use the 2x II extender, though only with Manual Focus. I used this combination to get a great shot of a leopard that with my 70-200mm f2.8L looked like a speck.

Hahnel HL-511 (BP-511A) Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery by Mark Bradley      Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Hahnel HL-511 (BP-511A) Lithium Ion Rechargeable BatteryHaving purchased a Canon 20D many years ago, I also bought several Hahnel batteries. I have used them in extremely cold temps (down to -20C; though they obviously don't last long, hence the need for having several) and also high temperatures (+40C) and they are still going strong after all of these years. The reduction in price compared to the Canon version meant that for the same amount of money I could always have spares (indeed have some charging whilst I was out shooting). A very dependable make at a terrific price.

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM Lens by Vanda Wallace      Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM LensBought this lens 2 weeks ago and the service from Bristol Cameras was excellent. 5 stars for that. The lens is big, solid and heavy. It is taking a bit of getting used to but the results are coming. Hand held some of the pictures at full zoom look a bit soft but others are pin sharp with amazing detail. So I am assuming its my technique thats at fault and not the lens. The OS works very well and really does give you an advantage hand held at slow speed. On a tripod the results are consistantly excellent at all lengths and apertures. I mean amazing details down to being able to count the pores on someones skin at full zoom range. Excellent value lens and well recommended

Nikon SB400 Speedlight Flash by Gary Gibbons      Date Added: Tuesday 14 April, 2009

Nikon SB400 Speedlight FlashCompact flash unit for the Nikon D range that you'll want to keep on your camera as an improvement to the fill-in 'pop-up' flash. Works very well for typical shots, but not a SB-600/800 in terms of power and control. A very nice flash to have even to accompany a more creative unit. It has produced some very satisfying results and my initial concern of power drainage from only 2 AA batteries was unfounded as the gun produced over 200 shots on one set. At around 5 secs between charges the delay is acceptable enough too. Don't worry about the lack of manual control, the camera and flash work perflectly together. Could do with a battery life indicator...my only criticism!

This cord is well made and now includes a metal thread for tripod/bracket mounting rather than plastic in the last model and indeed some of the copies that I have seen. It also has weather sealing if used with suitable Canon cameras and the locking mechanism is the same excellent one used on the latest Speedlite 580EXII flash. It also maintains all functions available if the flash is used on camera and the 2' cord is enough to get your flash off camera and onto a bracket for portrait and also macro photography. Dicapac WP510 Waterproof Case by Treena Westwood      Date Added: Wednesday 04 March, 2009

Dicapac WP510 Waterproof CaseTook this with me to Mexico for a Snuba dive, and although I used my sons Canon A560, it worked brilliantly. Had to put the lens extender to allow for the lens, which as Will Stewart said can catch if it's not completely aligned correctly. Best tip is to try to pull as much air out the bag as possible. Perfectly waterproof, my Snuba dive was to 20ft, and no problems whatsoever. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone.

Kenko 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 DG Teleconverter For SonyVery impressed; I use on a Nikon D300 with a Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di macro. Unless you have a full-frame sensor you should see no noticeable difference in IQ, provided the lens you mount it on is of good quality. Only small minus is that contrast falls off slightly.

It is easy to adjust & lock, lightweight but sturdy and good value at this price. I would certainly recommend it if you are looking to use it for a similar application. I haven't tried it with a camera but given the weight of my fieldscope I am sure it would perform well with an SLR or DSLR.

Hahnel HRC 280 Remote Shutter Release by Derek Corban      Date Added: Tuesday 17 February, 2009

Hahnel HRC 280 Remote Shutter ReleaseI was slightly sceptical about buying a non genuine Canon accessory. My fears have been allayed. The remote works perfectly. Half a press of the button lets the camera focus and a full press obviously releases the shutter. Keep it pressed for continuous shooting. With the camera set to bulb, just press the button and slide it forward to lock the shutter open. Pull back to release. Build quality feels okay and although its not the heaviest of duty plastic, I imagine that it will be quite serviceable. Furthermore at the time of purchase it was half the 'high street' shop price, which in itself was considerably cheaper than its Canon equivalent.

Canon EP-EX15 Eyepiece ExtenderI wear spectacles and had difficulty getting the whole view through the viewfinder - unable at times to see both sides of the frame. The extender has made viewing so much better and easier. It cuts nothing out of my view and it saves me squashing my face up against the camera. Although the image appears slightly further away and consequently a little smaller, it is definitely worth the sacrifice to me.

Manfrotto 488 RC4 Head by Ian Burnett      Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Manfrotto 488 RC4 HeadVery good ball head, but with hindsight I would have probably gone for the RC2 model. I went for the RC4 because I quite liked the idea of having a spirit level in the base plate, but didn't appreciate just how large this plate is. It is very big: putting it on my Canon 350D makes hand-holding quite uncomfortable and I need to take the plate off whenever I'm using the camera hand-held for any length of time, which sort of defeats the object of having a quick-release plate in the first place. The ball-head itself is superb however: locks solidly with little effort and in pretty much any orientation I've tried. Very fast way of working too.

Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod by Ian Burnett      Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Manfrotto 055XPROB TripodSolid tripod at a reasonable price. I'm quite tall (just over 6ft) and the extra height afforded over the 190XPPROB is handy. At full extension with ball head, the eyepiece is pretty much at a perfect level. Not really used the extending central column for gaining extra height (it gets quite wobbly with a heavy dSLR 7ft in the air!), but moving it to horizontal orientation is great for macro shots. This is quite a heavy model, but a comparable carbon-fibre tripod would be at least a hundred quid more. The extra weight can be a bonus when trying to keep things still in windy locations.

Bought a spare one in addition to the one supplied with my Manfrotto 488 head for my camcorder, to save having to take the original off my dSLR. I think this is proprietary to Manfrotto: don't expect it to work on other types of heads. Not a problem if you only have Manfrotto-style heads.

Canon EW83J Lens Hood by Jon Moorby      Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Canon EW83J Lens HoodThis is a good quality lens hood from Canon, it is well made and has a snug fit, and once fixed to the front of the lens with a quick twist it doesn't move. It is made from tough plastic with a flock lining to reduce stray light and reflections from the inner surfaces. It helps reduce flair when shooting into the sun - something that this lens has a bit of a reputation for. The hood can be fitted on backwards for storage, and although the lens can be used with it like this, zooming becomes difficult because the hood then covers much of the zoom ring.

Nikon D90 Body by Timothy Maidens      Date Added: Thursday 12 February, 2009

Nikon D90 BodyI bought this camera as a second body as I already own a D300 and can honestly say that I am very impressed. Whilst not up to D300 standard, the build quality of the D90 like all Nikons I have owned so far is very good and in action it performs very well indeed. So far I have not been able to distinguish any difference in picture quality between the two cameras. Notably on one recent poor lighting occasion the D90's autofocus system actually performed better than that of it's bigger brother. The feature I honestly like the most about the camera is it's menu system, more comprehensive than the D40/D60 entry level models but not as overcomplex (at times) as my D300. It is also very accesible making quick adjustments a doddle, greatly reducing my chances of missing the shot. Although I didn't buy the camera for it, the video mode has proved itself useful a couple of times and is a handy little extra. All in all, I am really pleased with my purchase ..... Nice one Nikon.

Sigma 10-20mm f4.0-5.6 EX DC / HSM Lens by Keith McLuckie      Date Added: Sunday 08 February, 2009

Sigma 10-20mm f4.0-5.6 EX DC / HSM LensI had been looking for a wide angle lens for my Nikon D60 intensively for nearly a month. I had briefly considered the Nikon 12-24mm but it is very expensive and doesn't significantly out perform the Sigma - the Sigma is a very significant 2mm wider too. The Sigma is not a fish-eye - so verticals stay vertical - that is, all the time you do! The quality feels every bit as good as my Nikon 18-55mm VR lens. Its just slightly larger in diameter. I often read people who aren't engineers (clearly) whingeing about the use of plastics. I cannot see a problem, polymers are perfect - light, self-lubricating, thermally-dimensionally stable, lend themselves to production of extremely precise components - repeatedly and consistently and cheaply - providing the designer chooses the correct polymer - in this lens they have. The lens comes with hood, a revised lens front cover (so use is possible with hood in place) and a useful carry case. The autofocus motor (HSM) works smoothly and very rapidly in complete silence and clearly it and the camera talk to each other without problem. What a piece of glass it is as well - much prettier and clever than jewellery!! Now what does it perform like - FANTASTIC! You can get right in there - forcing the viewer of your picture right into it. Get in close with the wideangle and really use the depth you get and you won't be disappointed by this lens. (But don't use to to "get it all in" - take two shots with a standard lens moving to the side a bit with the second and stitch them together in software as a panorama) The pictures can be stunning if you do your bit. At the mundane end - I'm sure creative real-estate agents will like it for internal shots - to the creative end where you can get right into the foreground all the way to the end of the background - as a friend remarked about one of my shots with it - "it's like being there and looking". Colour rendition is excellent, flare no more than any other wide angle when bright light sources are in frame and less that some I've used. What more can I say? It's not cheap in absolute terms but for a very wide lens it's a bargain. If you want a good very wide lens then buy it - you will not be disappointed.

Nikon 60mm f2.8 G ED AF-S Micro Nikkor Lens by Roderick Woods      Date Added: Friday 06 February, 2009

Nikon 60mm f2.8 G ED AF-S Micro Nikkor LensI have used this lens on a Nikon D3X. CONS: 1 On black and white resolution charts with a chart 80 cm across filling the FX area the lens gave lower resolution than an AIS f4 105 mm Micro Nikkor or PC Micro Nikkor 85 mm f 2.8 D. 2 It has noticeable barrel distortion and vignetting. 3 It has a short working distance as it is not a higher focal length, but the longer Micro lenses I have tried do not perform well enough. It is comparable to AIS f2.8 55 mm of which I have worn out three examples. It is not always practical for field use and I may have to carry a longer lens as I had to with the 55 mm Micro. 4 Does not take extension rings. PROS: 1 Easy to focus as it is f2.8 and is not manual. Autofocus worked perfectly even at closest focus. Very clear image on 'zoomed' Live View. 2 Focus control tight with little backlash. Old f4 105 mm is bad and needs the focus ring locking. 3 Should be more weather-proof and mechanically strong than the 85 mm PC Micro which is a delicate design. 4 Focusses to 1:1. Does not need extension rings! 5 G type lens. Aperture changes do not interfere with close focus setting. Excellent for taking aperture series! f9 is sharpest over the maximum field, but through to f16 is necessary to increase DOF. f16 is acceptable on some subjects. 6 It significantly outperformed the other lenses at 1:2 reproduction on fabric samples. Probably due to better maintenance of focus. Pictures taken using a remote release and 'Mirror up' in Live View. 7 Quick and easy to use outside in a snowstorm taking close ups of flowers on plants. Individual pollen grains are visible in pictures. Lens hood was adequate as the lens is commendably narrow. This was not true of the 24 - 70 mm f2.8 which retired with a wet filter. 8 Landscape pictures are without fault! Conclusion: A worthy replacement for the AIS f2.8 55 mm which was for years my standard lens used with Kodachrome 25 and Ektar 25. On the 24 MP D3X it outperforms the sensor. Few other lenses I have tried do so. The pictures I have taken so far are visually extremely satisfying.

Sigma 150-500mm f5.0-6.3 APO DG OS HSM LensThe lens is not quite as heavy as I thought it would be. It is very well weighted when used with a Canon EOS 450D. I would recommend a monopod or tripod for prolonged use, or at least a bean bag, although I have used it handheld at 500mm with great results. The included lens hood works very well for keeping out unwanted light and is very useful for keeping spots of rain off the front of the lens. It is a great long reaching lens.
