Sigma 150-500mm f5.0-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens by Colin Albrow

Date Added: Monday 29 June, 2009

Sigma 150-500mm f5.0-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens Super lens delivered in double quick time. I have used this for bird photography and I think it compares very favourably with the Canon 100 - 400 lens at a lot lower price

Slik Sprint Pro 2 GM Tripod by Daniel Dorosz

Date Added: Saturday 27 June, 2009

Slik Sprint Pro 2 GM Tripod Amazingly lightweight for a full size tripod. Be aware that inevitably you compromise sturdiness for lightness. While perfectly adequate for my D60 with kit lens (indoors), it was unusable with the 70-300VR. I've ordered a sturdier ball-head for use with the heavy lens, hopefully that will do the trick.

Sigma 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 APO DG / HSM Lens by John Haynes

Date Added: Tuesday 23 June, 2009

Sigma 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 APO DG / HSM Lens I have had this lens for about 18 months. The Bristol Cameras shop is a very small 'corner site' but with my "Christmas Money" in early January I turned up wanting to buy a 70-300 zoom for my Canon 350D. Amazingly they happened to have on the premises every Canon, Sigma and 'other' combination or equivalent lenses and having bought my camera with me, I was able to 'try' them all out including the far more expensive Canon IS equivalent. Truth to tell, I could have bought any of them but in the end bought this Sigma because on the same camera body with the same lighting conditions I decided that this was the best and today, I don't regret my choice, all that I can say.

Sealife SL9618 Flash Diffuser For SL961 Strobe by Jeff Cooke

Date Added: Saturday 20 June, 2009

Sealife SL9618 Flash Diffuser For SL961 Strobe About time Sealife produced this item. Well made and good fitting product. Disappointed that the surround is black unlike as in the advertised item photo. Hopefully this won't sharpen the flash cut-off when the diffuser section is folded out of the way - a white diffuser surround may have softened the edges? - although I have still to try the diffuser out underwater.

Seculine Twin-1 R4N Wireless Shutter Release by DAVID LONSDALE

Date Added: Sunday 14 June, 2009

Seculine Twin-1 R4N Wireless Shutter Release The Seculine Twin - 1 R4N Wirless Sutter Release is Absolutly marvelous! Why: - well it has no wires either to the transmitter or the receiver; though it is also suppled with cord with the ten pin connector (receiver)at one end & a plug at the other end to connect to the transmitter. I prefer going totally cordless! The transmitter and receiver are well built & compact in nature.Just be carefull when attatching the reciever to the ten pin socket, its fiddly; one could easily bend the recievers pins. The transmiter has settings - focus (half depressed), fully depressed to take the picture, push the mechanism away from your body, up, for continuious shooting. I bought a wirless shutter release elsware, the battery failed in the reciever, the battery cannot be replaced. I wasted my money! I won't with the Seculine! The Seculine mechanism works on my Nikon D300 & Fuji S5 Pro. This Seculine Wirless Release is the best I have seen, I have NO doubts in recomending it to all! I might even by another & keep the reciever attatched to the camera?

Pentax Optio W60 by Terrie Alexander

Date Added: Wednesday 10 June, 2009

Pentax Optio W60 I bought this to use while kayaking (having trashed one mobile phone already). I've not had the chance to use it afloat yet, but I have stuck it in the river and it was fine! OK the picture quality isn't the same as my D90, but it's perfectly good enough. It has far more settings (bar shutter & aperture..) and in-camera processing tweaks than I thought it would, the digital zoom is actually very good (never thought I'd ever say that!), and it's tiny with nice big clear screen. Buttons are easy to use (though the zoom is on the back); the menus are logical. I thoroughly recommend this as a point & shoot - even better value as you can use it underwater. Excellent!

Canon WD-H37 II Wide Angle Converter Lens by Rory Prior

Date Added: Saturday 06 June, 2009

Canon WD-H37 II Wide Angle Converter Lens This 0.7x wide angle converter adds some much needed extra field of view to the wide end of the zoom range on my Canon HF100. The lens has a metal body and feels well built. Image sharpness seems good, if the quality is degraded at all it's not going to be noticeable in video. The only real caveats are that it has moderate barrel distortion at the wide end and it's quite large and heavy compared to how light and tiny the HF100 itself is. Still highly recommended if you want to get in some nice footage of landscapes or just to capture a more complete scene when you're off on holiday.

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S VR DX Lens by Stephen Ellis

Date Added: Saturday 06 June, 2009

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 G ED AF-S VR DX Lens Although this is a kit lens from a Nikon D90, it is a perfect partner to my Nikon D80. It is lighter and smaller than the 18-200mm and the 18-135mm nikkor lens plus it still has VR. Also as from what the previous reviewer has said I also will be using this lens as my main lens for 90% of shots.

Pentax 35mm f2.8 SMC DA Macro Limited Lens by Mark McKeever

Date Added: Thursday 04 June, 2009

Pentax 35mm f2.8 SMC DA Macro Limited Lens This is a great lens. It's small, light, sensationally well built and beautiful to handle. Its performance is first rate, the images it produces are sharp across the frame, even from wide apertures, and show great contrast, definition and very little in the way of chromatic abberation or lens flare - in fact I have been completely unable to induce any lens flare at all, even with the sun directly in the frame - impressive stuff. Macro performance is very good, although this is not the lens to use if you want to take close-ups of bugs and critters - the working distance is very short. But for floral or other still life work this is not a problem. Also a very nice general purpose "walk around" lens, with a field of view similar to the classic 50mm of the film era. I like this lens a lot and would highly recommend it.

Lensbaby Muse - Plastic Optics by Martin Byrne

Date Added: Saturday 30 May, 2009

Lensbaby Muse - Plastic Optics Bought the Muse plastic after looking at examples of results on Flickr (search 'lensbaby'). Id been wanting a certain feel to my images and was suffering from 'red spot' fever, in other words I was thinking of a Leica compact, with f2.8. I liked the style of the pictures, but 500 quid! Realised that I mostly wanted the shallow DOF and some distortion. Having been out for a day with the Muse and 2.8 on my Nikon D200 in A mode, it is without doubt FUN. Now I am wrestling with the fact that it could be regarded as a 'one trick pony'. I hope to find that it is a far more subtle tool when I try it with other apertures, and possibly some portraiture or still life. I wont regret buying it in any case, a snip at 65 quid, when compared to the Leica, and macro to boot.

Jobo Photo GPS Unit by Neil Dunlop

Date Added: Tuesday 26 May, 2009

Jobo Photo GPS Unit It works well and is very very fast at picking up your location. It seems to do this even when you are in trees. OVERALL: I like it. Expensive but does the job effectively. The software does work 'straight out of the box' but needs improvement. Main, Pros are: 1) Fast location identification. 2) Light, small. 3) True position at which you took the photo. Main Cons: 1) Can only tag all photos imported. 2) Can't use the camera's built in flash.

Date Added: Sunday 17 May, 2009

Tamron 55-200mm f4.0-5.6 Di II LD Macro Lens My wife bought this lens for me as xmas present.I have only tried it out recently and the results were good, the lens is sharp light easy to use build quality is ok. I used my Sigma 17-70 lens taking photos of motor cross last year found the lens zoom range, telephoto was not enough. As I am going to the TT races in June I think the Tamron will do the job. As I did not want to spend a fortune on a lens that I only may use once or twice a year this lens is ideal. At thev moment I would rate the lens 4.5 stars untill further evaluation.

Cokin P Series ND Graduated Kit (H250A) by Mark Richards

Date Added: Saturday 16 May, 2009

Cokin P Series ND Graduated Kit (H250A) Cokin filters offer good value-for-money, and I'm using this kit to get a feel for using ND grads in landscape photography, as they cost roughly a third of the price of a LEE set they're ideal for dipping a toe in the water and deciding if its a style of photography that is of interest. The kit contains Cokin's standard P series holder, and a set of three soft graduated filters, corresponding to 1, 2 and 3 stops worth. All three come in their own plastic case to keep everything clean and safe. Optically they seem to be acceptable, no obvious colour casts or distortions. As the holder is Cokin's standard, it isn't suitable for use with my Sigma 10-20mm lens at its wider settings as the arms of the filter holder are visible in-shot, luckily I already have another that has been trimmed back to just the thin slot for circular filters and the first sprung type for the ND grads, only drawback is I won't have the option of fitting more than one resin filter with that lens. If I do decide to get serious, I'll need to upgrade to a larger format, such as Cokin's Pro X series or indeed the much-recommended LEE.

Olympus E520 Body by Andrew Gagg

Olympus E520 Body A bit smaller and lighter than my E-1, with I/S and a higher pixel count - these were main considerations, plus compatibility with existing Olympus bits. Crumpler Muffin Top 7500 by Matthew Cooper

Date Added: Wednesday 13 May, 2009

Crumpler Muffin Top 7500 Just received my Crumpler Muffin Top 7500 and am seriously pleased with it. Upgraded from a Pretty Boy XL which was ideal for my D40 but not quite up to my D90. My Nikon D90 sits snug and firm in the middle with a snug fitting pocket for my 55-200mm, flash and comfortably has room for another lens, cloths, extra cards, a cleaning kit, spare battery, wireless remote and body cap, it even has a little space where you can tuck the strap away neatly too. All told, a top-quality bag with plenty of room, I love it!

Canon Powershot G10 by andrew taylor

Date Added: Monday 20 April, 2009

Canon Powershot G10 This is a great little camera, and can produce great results. I carry this camera all the time in my rucsac everywhere. All the quality without the bulk of a DSLR I have only found two faults: 1. the light balance is often knocked taking it in and out of the case and needs to be checked every time you use it. 2. If you use the higher ISO, it does get very grainy Even being critical, I would still buy this camera again. Cheers Andrew PS the mail order from BC was excellent - Thanks

Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM EF Lens by Mark Bradley

Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM EF Lens If you're considering going on a safari then I have to say that you would find it hard to find a better lens without the need of a BBC support crew. The compact size means that you don't find yourself hitting other people in confined safari vehicles and the image stabilisation, speed of auto-focus and the quality glass expected in an L series lens mean that you should get some great images even if the animals stay slightly further away than you would hope. If you want to extend the zoom to 800mm then you can use the 2x II extender, though only with Manual Focus. I used this combination to get a great shot of a leopard that with my 70-200mm f2.8L looked like a speck.

Hahnel HL-511 (BP-511A) Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery by Mark Bradley

Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Hahnel HL-511 (BP-511A) Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Having purchased a Canon 20D many years ago, I also bought several Hahnel batteries. I have used them in extremely cold temps (down to -20C; though they obviously don't last long, hence the need for having several) and also high temperatures (+40C) and they are still going strong after all of these years. The reduction in price compared to the Canon version meant that for the same amount of money I could always have spares (indeed have some charging whilst I was out shooting). A very dependable make at a terrific price.

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM Lens by Vanda Wallace

Date Added: Sunday 19 April, 2009

Sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 APO DG OS HSM Lens Bought this lens 2 weeks ago and the service from Bristol Cameras was excellent. 5 stars for that. The lens is big, solid and heavy. It is taking a bit of getting used to but the results are coming. Hand held some of the pictures at full zoom look a bit soft but others are pin sharp with amazing detail. So I am assuming its my technique thats at fault and not the lens. The OS works very well and really does give you an advantage hand held at slow speed. On a tripod the results are consistantly excellent at all lengths and apertures. I mean amazing details down to being able to count the pores on someones skin at full zoom range. Excellent value lens and well recommended

Nikon SB400 Speedlight Flash by Gary Gibbons

Date Added: Tuesday 14 April, 2009

Nikon SB400 Speedlight Flash Compact flash unit for the Nikon D range that you'll want to keep on your camera as an improvement to the fill-in 'pop-up' flash. Works very well for typical shots, but not a SB-600/800 in terms of power and control. A very nice flash to have even to accompany a more creative unit. It has produced some very satisfying results and my initial concern of power drainage from only 2 AA batteries was unfounded as the gun produced over 200 shots on one set. At around 5 secs between charges the delay is acceptable enough too. Don't worry about the lack of manual control, the camera and flash work perflectly together. Could do with a battery life indicator...my only criticism!

Olympus E520 Body by Keith Otter

Date Added: Tuesday 14 April, 2009

Olympus E520 Body I bought this camera, plus Sigma 18-50 and 55-200 mm lenses, three months ago and am very pleased with it. It has been criticised for having too many buttons but I've found them an advantage. The controls for all the settings I may want to change during a shoot are clearly marked and easily accessible. Admittedly, though, when feeling for the control wheel my thumb does occasionally hit the AF point selector button instead. I do have some reservations about the AF system. Initially this gave me disappointing results. However, I followed advice I read to use the centre AF point only and since then the focussing has generally been spot-on.

Canon OC-E3 Off Camera Shoe Cord by Trevor Grainger

Date Added: Sunday 05 April, 2009

Canon OC-E3 Off Camera Shoe Cord As always Canon quality is excellent. This cord is well made and now includes a metal thread for tripod/bracket mounting rather than plastic in the last model and indeed some of the copies that I have seen. It also has weather sealing if used with suitable Canon cameras and the locking mechanism is the same excellent one used on the latest Speedlite 580EXII flash. It also maintains all functions available if the flash is used on camera and the 2' cord is enough to get your flash off camera and onto a bracket for portrait and also macro photography. Well recommended!

Spare O-Ring For Canon WP-DC11 As o-rings go this is the only one recommended by Canon for the WP-DC11 casing. If you're going on holiday and you don't carry a spare then, when it all goes horribly wrong, you'll wish you'd got one when you had the chance. Don't delay buy one today!

Manfrotto 7301YB M-Y Tripod by Peter Shaw

Date Added: Monday 23 March, 2009

Manfrotto 7301YB M-Y Tripod This is my first tripod except for the mini one used on my compact. I wanted something light for my rambles yet sturdy enough for my light DSLR and long lens (up to 2kg). This seems as though it will fulfill it's purpose. Slightly plasticky. Only time will tell how the engineering holds up to my amateur use.

Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS / HSM Lens This lens is excellent value for money - I have replaced my standard kit lens supplied with my Nikon D60 with this Sigma lens and am quickly adapting to it. Pleased with the quality -except I have to keep the lock on to stop the zoom easing out of its own accord when I am carrying it - which means I have to remember to unlock it before I use it- frustrating when you want to take a pic quickly and have forgotten to undo lock!

Pentax K20D Body The K20D arrived today and I have been using it all day. I have no previous experience of digital SLRs, but I find it amazingly easy to use. The Tamron lens from my old Pentax film camera works beautifully. I am truly astonished by the performance of this camera, taking photographs directly into the sun, to candle light, a bonfire in the dark and much more. It is a serious camera for me, I am an architect and taking photographs of my work will now be a joy.

Date Added: Tuesday 10 March, 2009

Manfrotto 776YB M-Y Monopod I went to Focus on Imaging 2009 at the NEC 2 weeks ago and tried lots of monopods, the Manfrotto 776YB M-Y was the lightest and most compact of all at the show. I think it is sturdy enough to support my Canon digital slr with either standard or medium telephoto lens but light enough not to put me off carrying it when out walking, or packing in a suitcase if going further afield.

Olympus MJU Tough 8000 Brilliant little camera. For the money, I truely believe it to be a fantastic piece of equipment and the image quality is pretty good (and I am an slr user). This camera has been bought as a secondary compact and especially for the underwater mode which having tested it already is brilliant. I strongly recommend the Olympus neoprene case as well, compliments the camera really well.

Olympus PT-037 Underwater Housing For SP-550 & SP-560 Ultra Zoom by Jason Collyer

Date Added: Saturday 07 March, 2009

Olympus PT-037 Underwater Housing For SP-550 & SP-560 Ultra Zoom SP-560 with PT-037 - I used this combination for the first time for a dive trip to the Maldives this year. When delivered I was a little concerned over the size of the housing, it's pretty big, I'm very much an amateur with previous set up being a small Fuji F30 camera and housing. However once in the water the Olympus combo's size became quite reassuring and encouraged me to steady myself before taking shots rather than blitzing away at anything that moved. There are obviously a lot of functions on this camera to learn and I struggled at times especially when adding the use of a strobe into the equation but despite this the Olympus results spoke for themselves.

Nikon SB-R1 Speedlight Kit by Brian Houghton

Nikon SB-R1 Speedlight Kit Extremely impressed with the results of this kit. Firstly I must comment I didn't realise it came in such a neat case, all the accessories can be packed neatly away in this well designed case with room for more kit to be added (like the SU-800). The two lights that come with kit work very well and are easy to setup. My only gripe is that Nikon do not supply batteries, but these can easily be found on the website.

Date Added: Wednesday 04 March, 2009

Dicapac WP510 Waterproof Case Took this with me to Mexico for a Snuba dive, and although I used my sons Canon A560, it worked brilliantly. Had to put the lens extender to allow for the lens, which as Will Stewart said can catch if it's not completely aligned correctly. Best tip is to try to pull as much air out the bag as possible. Perfectly waterproof, my Snuba dive was to 20ft, and no problems whatsoever. Would thoroughly recommend this to anyone.

Kenko 1.4x DGX AF Pro 300 Teleconverter Very impressed; I use on a Nikon D300 with a Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di macro. Sealife DC800 (SL180) Underwater Digital Camera by Alan Foster

Date Added: Saturday 21 February, 2009

Sealife DC800 (SL180) Underwater Digital Camera I took this camera with me on holiday to the Red Sea. I used both on land and underwater. The picture quality is really good. Underwater when I used it in the "Sea" mode the pictures were still a little blue below 20 metres but at depths above that OK. When used with the external flash both at night and in the day results were good. I have only just started try using the manual white balance but the results from this were really good at all depths. I took it down to 35m with no problems at all. Editing photos was a pleasure as the 8 megapixel allows for a lot of cropping without losing quality. This camera is a real improvement on the DC 500 which I was using before. I like it!

Hahnel HRC 280 Remote Shutter Release by Derek Corban

Date Added: Tuesday 17 February, 2009

Hahnel HRC 280 Remote Shutter Release I was slightly sceptical about buying a non genuine Canon accessory. My fears have been allayed. The remote works perfectly. Half a press of the button lets the camera focus and a full press obviously releases the shutter. Keep it pressed for continuous shooting. With the camera set to bulb, just press the button and slide it forward to lock the shutter open. Pull back to release. Build quality feels okay and although its not the heaviest of duty plastic, I imagine that it will be quite serviceable. Furthermore at the time of purchase it was half the 'high street' shop price, which in itself was considerably cheaper than its Canon equivalent.

Canon EP-EX15 Eyepiece Extender by Derek Corban

Date Added: Tuesday 17 February, 2009

Canon EP-EX15 Eyepiece Extender I wear spectacles and had difficulty getting the whole view through the viewfinder - unable at times to see both sides of the frame. The extender has made viewing so much better and easier. It cuts nothing out of my view and it saves me squashing my face up against the camera. Although the image appears slightly further away and consequently a little smaller, it is definitely worth the sacrifice to me.

Manfrotto 488 RC4 Head by Ian Burnett

Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Manfrotto 488 RC4 Head Very good ball head, but with hindsight I would have probably gone for the RC2 model. I went for the RC4 because I quite liked the idea of having a spirit level in the base plate, but didn't appreciate just how large this plate is. It is very big: putting it on my Canon 350D makes hand-holding quite uncomfortable and I need to take the plate off whenever I'm using the camera hand-held for any length of time, which sort of defeats the object of having a quick-release plate in the first place. The ball-head itself is superb however: locks solidly with little effort and in pretty much any orientation I've tried. Very fast way of working too.

Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod by Ian Burnett

Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod Solid tripod at a reasonable price. I'm quite tall (just over 6ft) and the extra height afforded over the 190XPPROB is handy. At full extension with ball head, the eyepiece is pretty much at a perfect level. Not really used the extending central column for gaining extra height (it gets quite wobbly with a heavy dSLR 7ft in the air!), but moving it to horizontal orientation is great for macro shots. This is quite a heavy model, but a comparable carbon-fibre tripod would be at least a hundred quid more. The extra weight can be a bonus when trying to keep things still in windy locations.

Manfrotto 410PL Spare Quick Release Plate by Ian Burnett

Manfrotto 410PL Spare Quick Release Plate As a quick release plate, it's fine. Bought a spare one in addition to the one supplied with my Manfrotto 488 head for my camcorder, to save having to take the original off my dSLR. I think this is proprietary to Manfrotto: don't expect it to work on other types of heads. Not a problem if you only have Manfrotto-style heads.

Canon EW83J Lens Hood by Jon Moorby

Date Added: Monday 16 February, 2009

Canon EW83J Lens Hood This is a good quality lens hood from Canon, it is well made and has a snug fit, and once fixed to the front of the lens with a quick twist it doesn't move. It is made from tough plastic with a flock lining to reduce stray light and reflections from the inner surfaces. It helps reduce flair when shooting into the sun - something that this lens has a bit of a reputation for. The hood can be fitted on backwards for storage, and although the lens can be used with it like this, zooming becomes difficult because the hood then covers much of the zoom ring.

Manfrotto 80cm Padded Tripod Bag (MBAG80P) I researched tripod bags as I had been given a Manfrotto tripod for Xmas. Some reviews said that the padded bag was unwieldy and heavy, but it isnt. Nikon D90 Body by Timothy Maidens

Date Added: Thursday 12 February, 2009

Nikon D90 Body I bought this camera as a second body as I already own a D300 and can honestly say that I am very impressed. Whilst not up to D300 standard, the build quality of the D90 like all Nikons I have owned so far is very good and in action it performs very well indeed. So far I have not been able to distinguish any difference in picture quality between the two cameras. Notably on one recent poor lighting occasion the D90's autofocus system actually performed better than that of it's bigger brother. The feature I honestly like the most about the camera is it's menu system, more comprehensive than the D40/D60 entry level models but not as overcomplex (at times) as my D300. It is also very accesible making quick adjustments a doddle, greatly reducing my chances of missing the shot. Although I didn't buy the camera for it, the video mode has proved itself useful a couple of times and is a handy little extra. All in all, I am really pleased with my purchase ..... Nice one Nikon.
